Hi.
I have Ubuntu installed on m[/highlight]y laptop but I want shift to Debian. Because I also have a Windows partition on that laptop and I want to get rid of it, I want to format the laptop and do a clean install of Debian. I have done that on other computers several times, so I know the procedure. Before I do that I would like to make a backup of all my files, to copy or restore them after the Debian install. In Ubuntu I have the application called 'backup'. So I am running the backup now to an external USB hard drive. On this hard drive I can see many .gz files with the size of 54MB.
My questions:
1.When the backup process is done I have to make sure that it went through fine and everything is now on the external USB hard drive. How can I check that all my files have been backed up? I can not verify it because everything is in these .gz files.
2.Is it possible to unzip all the .gz files and see the contend of the backup in the original files formats like pdf, jpegs, mpegs, mp3 etc?
3.Assuming the backup went through fine and all the files are complete on the external hard drive. Assuming too, that I have Debian installed and lets say Cinnamon as the desktop environment. Can I then restore the files from the backup (made in Ubuntu) to the new Debian/Cinnamon system? If so, how can I do that?
Thanks for your help
